Disney and Playhouse Square are teaming up to offer Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) grade 6-12 classrooms free access to a pre-recorded streaming performance of DISNEY'S NEWSIES: THE BROADWAY MUSICAL. With the impact of the pandemic on theaters and schools, Disney is committed to innovating new ways for students to remain engaged with the performing arts. By providing this NEWSIES Virtual Field Trip, Disney is investing in the next generation of storytellers and inspiring them to create the futures they imagine.
“Connecting students to the performing arts is one of the cornerstones of Playhouse Square’s not-for-profit mission,” said Vice President of Community Engagement & Education Daniel Hahn. “Even though we cannot bring students to the theater for live performance this year, we knew it was important to find ways to maintain that connection. Our partnership with Disney is helping us do so through the Disney Musicals in Schools program and with the NEWSIES Virtual Field Trip, we can expand our reach. We are so grateful to Disney for offering this incredible opportunity to the Cleveland Metropolitan School District.”
“Since the onset of the pandemic, we have been working to find creative and accessible ways to provide our content free to students and educators,” said Lisa Mitchell, Disney Theatrical Group’s Director of Education & Audience Engagement. “Earlier this year, we offered a virtually accessible version of THE LION KING Experience, a unique holistic arts education program that provides students and educators an immersive introduction to theater making through the lens of the Broadway production of THE LION KING. We are now thrilled to partner with Playhouse Square to pilot NEWSIES: THE BROADWAY MUSICAL as a virtual field trip. They have an excellent reputation for delivering quality education programs and we are excited to have them introduce this energetic and inspirational production to their students.”
DISNEY'S NEWSIES: THE BROADWAY MUSICAL will be available to CMSD classrooms from January 11-22. Access is free to grades 6-12 but registration is required. Playhouse Square is distributing registration information to eligible classrooms. CMSD educators may call 216-348-7909 or email schoolprograms@playhousesquare.org with questions. In addition to the performance, educators and students will have access to a study guide, a dance tutorial featuring iconic choreography from the show, as well as a talkback with Disney Vice President of Domestic and Regional Engagements Jack Eldon and Director of Production Operations Mimi Intagliata, moderated by Playhouse Square Assistant Director of Community Engagement & Education Sheffia Dooley.
“We thank Disney and our partners at Playhouse Square for bringing this production to CMSD scholars. The arts enrich all of our lives and are especially needed during the pandemic. We are excited about the possibilities for incorporating NEWSIES and the historical events that inspired the story in remote learning,” said CMSD CEO Eric Gordon.

Set in New York City at the turn of the century, NEWSIES is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged band of teenaged ‘newsies,’ who dreams only of a better life far from the hardship of the streets. But when publishing titans Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack finds a cause to fight for and rallies newsies from across the city to strike for what’s right.
