Why February 5? #PSQGivingDay

February 5, 1921, American business magnate and pioneer of the motion picture industry Marcus Loew opens the State Theatre on Euclid Avenue. As the marquee flickers to life, casting a glow over the hopeful faces gathered beneath, this was more than just the unveiling of a new theater—it was the beginning of a cultural revolution for our city.

Over the next two years, four more dazzling venues would rise along this stretch of Downtown Cleveland, forming the cornerstones of our Playhouse Square District.

Originally established to showcase Vaudeville and silent film, Playhouse Square has evolved in many ways through the decades, facing off adversity time and time again thanks to a determined community who refuse to let the lights go out on Euclid.

Through tireless restoration, a united community effort and the unshakable belief in the power of the arts, Playhouse Square stands today as one of Northeast Ohio’s most treasured cultural institutions and one of the world’s premier arts districts—a testament to the resilience of a city and the magic of the stage.
